The protests voice out the need to normalise sexual orientations that do not conform to the traditional heterosexual narrative. The first-ever Pride March was held one year after the Stonewall Uprising and ever since, every year the month of June has seen parades, marches, public gatherings, and events that celebrate the spectrum that surrounds gender identity and sexual orientation.Īpart from that, in many countries, this particular month calls for peaceful protests against the exclusion of the LGBTQA+ community in social, political, and cultural spaces. This uprising of June 28, 1969, ignited the fire of gay rights movement then and it now encompasses the struggles and achievements of the entire LGBTQIA+ community. This particular event and the following neighbourhood riots are of immense importance when we speak about the gay rights movement because this rioting is what led to June being marked as the Pride Month. Soon this small scuffle between the patrons of the bar and the police escalated and broke into what we today call the Stonewall Uprisings. However, this time, instead of being hauled at, the patrons of the bar resisted arrest and decided to protest. Now, in the 1960s, this was a usual event as the police back then often raided bars that hosted gay men and women. It was early hours in New York's Greenwich Village, when at a gay bar Stonewall Inn some policemen raided the bar and started hauling the customers.
